After graduating with an MSc in Physics and Chemistry, Barrie started work for the UKAEA. He worked firstly at Windscale until 1957, then moved to Dounreay weeks before the Windscale accident. After working on radiation induced chemical reactions, he then transferred to chemical plant operations around 1958.
